Energy- Utilities
As service providers that the general public relies on, utilities are continuously scrutinized by ratepapers/customers. The expectation is that uninterrupted service will be provided at reasonable costs. Recognizing this, as well as the impact of economic conditions, union influences, increasingly stringent regulations, a potential brain drain caused by retirements and attrition, and a more competitive environment, GFWCS has worked with energy providers to improve performance and reduce costs.
GFWCS has completed projects to improve the organizational structure as well as improve the performance of staff. We have worked with clients to develop Strategic Plans related to the attainment of goals; implemented cross-training and mentoring programs to feed succession plans; developed Service Agreements between Asset Managers and service providers; conducted process improvement activities; initiated management development and team building programs; aligned managers of different functional areas to work together toward mutual goals; and provided structured coaching to senior and mid-managers.
By leading teams in the development of procedures, a Project Management System was developed, tied to a Performance Management System that tracked projects and the performance of people and functional areas. This resulted in multi-millions of dollars in savings and has been responsible for continuous improvements over the last ten years.
In an effort to capture the knowledge base of experienced craft people, partner with unions, and comply with the need for zero tolerance for error, a unique development system was designed to identify and maintain performance levels of operators, maintainers, and key technical staff. In addition to letting people work at their own pace and concentrate on weak areas, the system reduced, by approximately half, the time required to move participants to journeyman status.
